Strawberries – So What’s Not to Love?

Strawberries - So What's Not to Love?

They’re easy and versatile, they flower in spring, fruit spring and summer, and have green leaves all year round (well, at least here in North Carolina).

I created my strawberry patch two years ago on my dad’s birthday. Two years later, the bed is filling in nicely and I can’t wait to see what it produces this year. The first year, not so much; last year, better but I wanted more! – but they were the sweetest berries I’ve ever eaten. Hoping for a bumper crop this year.

Have you planted your strawberries yet? It’s time!

Simple Soil Test

Simple Soil Test

Perform your soil test by placing a sample into two separate cups or containers. Add vinegar to one. If it fizzes your soil is alkaline. If not, add some water to the second cup and stir. Add baking soda. If it fizzes you have acidic soil. If neither have a reaction your soil is somewhat pH balanced.

A friend sent me this simple soil test. Haven’t tried it yet but I’ll let you know. Have any of you tried it?

Thanks for this, Christi Baus!

Garden Envy!

It’s finally time to get the gardens ready for Spring!

I’ve been working in the yard and reading what needs to be done to prepare, going around to local nurseries, and searching online for tips. Today, I came across this article and had to save it. Fabulous, fabulous gardens. Big congrats to these gardeners!

My Lemons are Growing!

My Lemons are Growing!

After the flowers, it was covered with green fruit buds. Now, a lot of the buds are gone but about 6 are really taking off.

From what I understand, the next major thing to happen is the leaves will fall off so the plant can send all of its energy to making fruit.

I love this plant!

Planted the Rosemary and Lavender

Planted the Rosemary and Lavender

Forgot to take more photos, but the starts that I cut of Rosemary and Lavender rooted well and I planted them in the yard today.

Five weeks from cutting to planting.

Fabulous way to propagate!

Spring Planting

Spring Planting

Saturday (March 16) it was 72 degrees F here so I just had to get out in the garden to spring plant!

In the vegetable garden I planted:

  1. Red Leaf Lettuce seed
  2. 8 packs of Lettuce plants
  3. 4 baby Broccoli plants
  4. Flat Leaf Parsley seed
  5. Dill seed
  6. baby Chive plant
  7. Carrot seed

In the flower garden I planted:

    1. Peony
    2. Gladiolus
    3. Dahlia
    4. Nastursium Jewel Mix

and a couple of other things that were given to me but I don’t know what they are!

I have not planted a flower garden in the past, but I’ve been given so many bulbs, seeds, and starts by my gardening friends that I cannot say “no”! We’ll see what all the new learning opportunities bring this year.

So much more left to plant.

Happy Gardening!
